A learning system based on formalized teaching but with the help of electronic resources is known as E-learning. This system enables students to learn teaching material or web-based material that has been uploaded before the lecture in the class, in helping the students to achieve a better understanding. In addition, it is possible to conduct online interactive learning through online discussion, quizzes and assignments to be answered by the students before and after attending lectures or laboratory activities. In addition, learning evaluations such as formative and summative exams also already have been utilized in the e-Learning facilities through CBT (Computer Based Test).
The development of information and communication technology has an impact on education. it has enabled many forms of distance learning through open educational resource (Open Content and Open Course). Distance learning offers students the opportunity to expand access to education at a distance or at another location. Distance learning can also help students significantly with educational costs, able to promote good learning experiences, and allow students to obtain higher satisfaction with their online learning. In medical education, the use of technology covers several areas such as telemedicine, tele-education, MOOC, etc.
By conducting Open Content and Open Course, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia is expected to optimize Higher Education services to community groups who cannot attend face-to-face and regular education by facilitating access to learning resources.
In its implementation, the Ministry of Research and Higher Education set indicators for distance education (Open Content and Open Course) through numbers of open content and open course programs that have been developed by faculty. Open Content (OC) is interpreted as providing educational material which is accessible and widely used. The Open Course (OR) is interpreted as an open content continuation stage, including the development of a course education using e-learning, evaluation and certification process using materials in OC.
In the Faculty of Medicine UI, the empowerment of SCeLE as a learning management system (LMS) has been implemented in the majority of preclinical and clinical modules. However, the use of SCeLE is restricted for students enrolled in UI, has not been developed into an open content (OC) or open course (OR).
In terms of readiness, some of the modules in Faculty of Medicine UI have prepared many learning materials for e-learning implementation that have been incorporated into SCeLE. Some departments in the Faculty of Medicine UI also have conducted learning and sharing activities through monthly-teleconference such as in gastroenterological endoscopy society, supported by the TEMDEC (Telemedicine Development Center of Asia). As for open course, FMUI has a collaboration with SEAMOLEC (Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization) related to the development of MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) and new built Moodle which is more user-friendly.
Current e-learning team in Faculty of Medicine UI consists of lecturers who have attended e-learning training and apply e-learning in the learning process. The team is incorporated in Center of e-Learning cluster. Our cluster also has a PH (Production House) unit that manages the manufacture of digital materials such as educational videos. In addition, our cluster also has a large capacity computer laboratory that can be used as a venue for computer based test exams, video conferences, and also for e-learning workshops. These are the basic power to support distance learning development in IMERI, Faculty of Medicine UI. Center of e-Learning Cluster of IMERI has the opportunity to increase the potential that already owned by Faculty of Medicine UI to develop the implementation of e-Learning, and OC-OR with a good standard.
